Are We Really Prepared for the Genetic Revolution?

Genetic data could lead to more personalized, meaningful education, but only if parents, teachers and policymakers understandgenetics well enough to correctly use the information.

When humans’ genetic information (known as thegenome) was mapped 15 years ago, it promised to change the world. Optimistsanticipated an era in which all genetic diseases would be eradicated.Pessimists feared widespread genetic discrimination. Neither of these hopes andfears have been realised.

The reason for this is simple: our genome iscomplex. Being able to locate specific differences in the genome is only a verysmall part of understanding how these genetic variants actually work to producethe traits we see. Unfortunately, few people understand just how complexgenetics really is. And as more and more products and services start to usegenetic data, there’s a danger that this lack of understanding could leadpeople to make some very bad decisions.
